3 Good Things: May 28, 2021

It's the last day of school for the girls. Summer, for us, begins now! While we have a few fun trips planned, I also hope to leave a lot of white space for impromptu adventures involving water, popsicles, and time with friends and neighbors. 

A few good things:

+ Radical acceptance. I try to do a Tara Brach meditation a once or twice a week. 

+ This gave me chills.

+ Binged the final season hard.

More Search, Less Feed

I relate so strongly to this piece by Austin Kleon. Sure, the internet is a crazy place, but I do find and discover a lot of amazing things – new music, long form articles, recipes that feed my family, podcast and show suggestions, etc. The past two years, I've pledged to be more intentional with my media consumption. I'm not quite there, but my habits have definitely improved. Here's to more searching and less feeding!

I'm so sad to hear of Bill Cunningham's passing. I was first introduced to him a few years ago, after watching this documentary, and have been a fan of his photography ever since. He had such a strong sense of identity and purpose in his work. His images and legend will certainly live on!

Make Yourself Interesting

Have you tried making yourself more interesting? Ah ha! This post made me realize how I gravitate towards people who are curious and have a desire to know. They tend to practice a particular activity or volunteer in their communities or read. I think it also has to do with that overused word passion. I really do admire that in others.

Work on being an interesting person other people want to be around and are willing to open door for…. There are many roads to becoming an interesting person, but they all involve developing your curiosity and your desire to know and understand — yourself, others, the world around you. You can read. You can pursue a new activity like knitting or rock climbing. You can volunteer. You can commit to asking three people a day an open-ended question about themselves and really listening to their responses. You can share your information and connections freely.

Mary Oliver is a breath of fresh air. Do yourself a favor and listen to this podcast over the weekend. You'll be left feeling inspired to walk, to scribble, to listen, and to really notice the world.
