Summer Solstice 2K16

Siem Reap, Cambodia

The solstice has come and gone, but I wanted to share this lovely poem as we enter into this new phase and season.

I thought of happiness, how it is woven
Out of the silence in the empty house each day
And how it is not sudden and it is not given
But is creation itself like the growth of a tree.
No one has seen it happen, but inside the bark
Another circle is growing in the expanding ring.
No one has heard the root go deeper in the dark,
But the tree is lifted by this inward work
And its plumes shine, and its leaves are glittering.

So happiness is woven out of the peace of hours
And strikes its roots deep in the house alone:
The old chest in the corner, cool waxed floors,
White curtains softly and continually blown
As the free air moves quietly about the room;
A shelf of books, a table, and the white-washed wall—
These are the dear familiar gods of home,
And here the work of faith can best be done,
The growing tree is green and musical.

For what is happiness but growth in peace,
The timeless sense of time when furniture
Has stood a life’s span in a single place,
And as the air moves, so the old dreams stir
The shining leaves of present happiness?
No one has heard thought or listened to a mind,
But where people have lived in inwardness
The air is charged with blessing and does bless;
Windows look out on mountains and the walls are kind.

New Music Fridays

True confession, I've watched this video a few times now and have listened to Maggie Rogers' latest single, Alaska, at least a dozen more. These kinds of viral videos make me so happy. I've really enjoyed following this story and her rise to fame. Plus, who doesn't love Pharrell?

New Music Fridays

A friend from Portland tipped me off to this band, Whitney. He called their latest album, Light Upon the Lake, the perfect soundtrack to summer. I couldn't agree more!

BBB

Brett's banana bread (BBB) is a personal favorite. We spent the morning baking two loaves - one for a friend and one for us. To give proper credit where it's due, the recipe comes from Cook's Illustrated

The process of making banana bread doesn't lend itself to the most appetizing of photos. Luckily (and more often than not), the finished product comes out beautifully!

Ingredients:
+ 1 3/4 c flour
+ 1 t baking soda
+ 1/2 t salt
+ 5 ripe bananas, peeled
+ 8 T butter, melted and cooled
+ 2 large eggs
+ 3/4 packed light brown sugar
+ 1 t vanilla extract

1. Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 350. Spray 8 1/2  by 4 1/2 inch loaf pan with vegetable oil spray. Whisk flour, baking soda, and salt together.

2. Place 5 bananas in separate bowl, cover, and microwave until bananas are soft and have released liquid about 5 minutes. (We don't have a microwave, so we freeze our bananas and let them thaw for a few hours.) Transfer bananas to fine-mesh strainer over medium bowl and allow to drain, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes. This should make 1/2-3/4 c liquid.

3. Transfer liquid to medium saucepan and cook over medium-high heat until reduced to 1/4 c, about 5 minutes. Remove pan from heat, stir reduced liquid into bananas, and mash with potato masher until mostly smooth. Whisk in butter, eggs, brown sugar, and vanilla.

4. Pour banana mixture into dry ingredients and stir until just combined, with some streaks of flour remaining. Scrape batter into pan.

5. Bake until toothpick inserted in center of loaf comes out clean, 55-75 minutes. Let loaf cool in pan for 10 minutes then turn onto wire rack and let cool for 1 hour before serving.

Bookmarked

In an effort to take more pictures, voila!

Sunday mornings are meant for catching up. And that's just what I'm doing - reading bookmarked articles, responding to emails, listening to podcasts.

+ Speaking of ways to spend a Sunday morning . . .

+ Closing the achievement gap, one quiet moment at a time.

+ Interior design envy

+ Ideas for my summer reading list

+ Speedy and delicious, my kind of recipes!

June Blooms

It sure does seem like May goes on for-ev-er, doesn't it? Besides it raining non-stop, I really had no problems with this past month. However, I am thrilled that June (read: summer) is now here!

Today was the perfect introduction to this next season. It was productive, warm, and carefree. I spent some time in the backyard admiring our new and returning blooms.

Lots of change is around and upon us. The biggest of all (pun intended) being that I'm pregnant . . . with twins! Without going into much detail, it's been a difficult few years, so we're thrilled to be blessed with not one but two little girls. They are due to make an appearance late October.

(Don't worry, this won't become a TMI mommy blog, but it is exciting news that I've wanted to share with whoever is still reading!)

New promise to myself these next couple of months - TAKE PICTURES! Then I'll be certain to blog more, too. Win-win.

Happy June, everyone!
